Church Village Green Park and Amphitheatre

Church village is a community park and amphitheatre located in the historic capitol of Barbados, Bridgetown. This green space has multiple purposes as it caters to the community, history and helps to enhance the environment. This project is part of the Bridgetown Redevelopment project and it is a collaboration between Kent Construction, Nature Group Limited, Consultant Engineering Partnership and Talma Mill Studios.

The amphitheatre at Church Village is meant to hold outdoor cultural events. The historic Lucas Street runs through Church Village and this park was therefore built around this. Other cultural elements of Church Village include the presence of old coin replicas, the old doors from Barbadian vernacular architecture and trees such as the bearded fig tree. Church Village is environmentally friendly as it has solar lighting and rainwater harvesting systems.

This well landscaped area provides a place for Barbadians and tourists to relax on hot days and to escape from the vibrant energy of the city. Replacing a once dilapidated space, Church Village has helped to bring back some of Bridgetown’s beauty. Upon my return to Barbados this summer, this is the first location that I made an effort to visit as it only opened on March 15th 2014. As one enters the park the feeling of peace is encompassing. The wooden pergolas and stone pillars in conjunction with the growing trees help to shut out the noise of the busy city.

Currently at high noon the sun shines through the pergola giving an unpleasant feeling to whoever is sitting on the bench beneath. I am unsure as to whether or not this is the plan but a simple addition of foliage on this pergola will help to diminish these uncomfortable conditions.

The park’s tranquility to its historic elements one can see the efforts in the development of Bridgetown.
